Quick Fixes To Your Most Common Beauty Problems

We’ve all come across a beauty problem at some point in our life - Okay, let’s be honest - You may even be experiencing one right now. Chapped lips, dark circles, the list goes on. Beauty problems are annoying and inconvenient, but there’s a quick and affordable solution to everything.

Here are some of the most common beauty problems and how to easily fix them!

1. Dry Lips

Dry lips can be unattractive as they are painful. If left untreated for a long period of time dry lips can become cracked, white, crusty, and bleed, ouch!

Causes: The causes of dry lips can vary but usually low humidity levels in the air, wind, biting or licking your lips and frequent sun exposure during the summer days are factors.

How to fix it: Begin by upping your water intake. This is great beauty advice all around, but especially if you live in a part of the world with low humidity levels. Moisturizing your lips by using a lip balm or a lip mask overnight like the Carmex Lip Balm and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and try to not lick your lips too frequently!

Gentle exfoliation with a lip scrub will remove dead skin, and make your lips feel and look smoother and healthier. Exfoliation will also increase blood circulation making your lips plumper and giving them a healthy rosy color while speeding up their healing process.

Remember smooth and healthy lips are the best base for lipstick. Moisturized lips make lip products go on smoother and last longer. Don't forget to use lip balm before applying lipstick – especially if you're using liquid lipstick as it’s notorious for drying out lips!

2. Weak Nails

Weak nails can be a nightmare, especially when you're trying to grow them out. They can bend and break causing you pain, making them pretty uncomfortable.

Causes: Weak nails are usually caused by external factors like harsh soaps or detergents that strip the nail of its natural oils and moisture. Chemicals in nail polish and nail polish remover will also damage them quite a bit, as well as having Acrylic nails. Some internal causes of weak nails are Vitamin deficiencies – like Biotin, Iron, and Calcium.

How to fix it: Start taking vitamin supplements or simply add more biotin, iron or calcium-rich foods into your diet like spinach, eggs, almonds, mushrooms, salmon, yogurt and leafy greens. Who knew the way to healthy nails could be so delicious?

If you love nail polish as much as we do, try to do your nails only once a week – decreasing your exposure to nail polish remover can benefit your nails tremendously. Acrylic has a high level of toxicity and prevents your nails from breathing which damages them further. Try finding a nail technician that will use gel polish instead of acrylic and limit visits to the salon to once a month to avoid damaging your nail bed. Take a break from doing your nails and try using nail fortifying treatments like Crème Abricot Fortifying Cream for Nails from Dior or CND Vinylux Rescue RXX Treatment. If you’re looking for a more natural remedy try rubbing natural oils like cold-pressed argan oil or jojoba oil into your nails and cuticles.

Pro Tip: Make natural remedies more efficient! Heat up your oil of choice to a temperature that is comfortable enough to soak your nails in. Do this every day for at least 5 min or until the oil gets cold. After rubbing it in your nails and cuticles put on a pair of light cotton gloves – do this right before going to sleep for better results.

Remember to always keep your cuticles and nails moisturized with a sulfate and paraben-free moisturizer like Hand and Nail Cream from Caudalie.

3. Split Ends

Healthy hair is something we all crave! Healthy hair looks and feels good and it’s one of the biggest confidence boosters. Giving your hair the TLC it needs can keep split ends in the past.

Causes: The causes of split ends can vary from person to person. Some of the most common are using too much heat on your hair when blow-drying, curling and straightening it, exposure to extreme weather temperatures in the wintertime, or overexposing your hair to chemicals that can be found in shampoo, conditioner and hair dyes.

How to fix it: Try using less heat when styling your hair. Use your blow dryer on the low heat, overnight curlers, and apply a heat protectant spray before straightening your hair. Our favorite overnight curlers and heat protectant spray are these Foam Curling Rollers Rods and the Perfect Defense Heat Protectant Spray from Moroccanoil. When choosing a hair styling tool try investing in ones with porcelain elements, they dry and style your hair more gently.

Cover up during the winter. Having your hair out in cold temperatures can be very damaging. Cold air sucks the moisture out of your hair making it more susceptible to breakage and split ends.

Look for shampoos and conditioners without parabens, sulfates, alcohol and synthetic fragrances. These unnecessary chemicals and ingredients will only dry your hair and make your ends split easier. Some clean brands we’ve been loving are Briogeo and Rocky Mountain Soap.

Remember to always keep the ends of your hair hydrated by not drying them completely and applying argan oil.

Pro Tip: Always leave coloring your hair to a professional, they will always choose the best and least damaging dyes for your hair – and if you decide to give yourself an at-home trim never use anything but hair cutting scissors to do so.

4. Bad Beauty Lighting

Bad Beauty Lighting (BBL) is the cause of many beauty mishaps. How many times have you been confident that your makeup look had turned out perfect only to go out in natural daylight and realize you had put on too much bronzer and your foundation or concealer weren’t blended properly? I mean we can’t be the only ones at war with our bathroom mirror, right?

Causes: The causes of BBL are very straight forward! Natural sunlight is the best one to do your makeup in because it provides the best reflection of your face. But on days when that’s not an option, we all turn to our bathroom mirror. However, most bathrooms use yellow, fluorescent, or cool lighting that’s shining from above out heads, which casts strange hues and shadows on our faces.

How to fix it: Natural daylight LEDs are the next best thing to natural sunlight. LEDs distribute an even light across your face and daylight LEDs have a color temperature that matches that of a naturally sunny day. Investing in a good LED mirror means doing your makeup will become less of a hassle and you will have the best results every day. Fancii mirrors are all designed with daylight LEDs and come in so many different sizes and shapes. From vanity mirrors to compact and suction mirrors that attach to your bathroom mirror, we have it all!

Remember that you have to stand, sit, or position yourself in front of your lighted mirror to avoid any shadows.

Pro Tip: Not sure which type of mirror suits your best? Take our quiz and find out!

5. Dark Circles

We can all agree that dark circles are something we would love to not see when we look in the mirror every morning. So how do we make them less visible?

Causes: Dark Circles are mostly hereditary but they can also be caused by lack of sleep, Iron deficiency, swollen blood vessels, and thin under-eye skin.

How to fix it: To reduce the appearance of dark circles start by getting a good night's sleep and keep a regular sleeping schedule. Because the change starts from the inside out, try to add more iron-rich foods like spinach, eggs, and salmon to your diet. You can place cold tea bags over your eyes for a relaxing remedy. They contain caffeine and help to stimulate blood circulation and reducing swelling.

If you’re looking for another at-home remedy try applying thin slices of cucumbers under or on your eyes – the vitamin C and Silica that the cucumber contains will help nourish and moisturize your under-eye skin. Using a cool Jade Roller before applying your makeup helps minimize undereye circles!

Pro Tip: There are a lot of products out there that can be used before you start applying your concealer that improves the appearance of dark circles like the Caffeine Solution from The Ordinary and the Powerful Strength Dark Circle Reducing Vitamin C Eye Serum from Khiel’s.

6. Dry Hands

Dry hands are a very common problem to have and we can all agree that it’s a very uncomfortable one. Dry skin feels rough to the touch, it can easily get white, flakey, cracked, itchy, and very sensitive to everyday tasks like washing your hands.

Causes: The causes of dry hands are usually external. Washing our hands often and exposing them to soaps, hand sanitizer, or not wearing any gloves when using harsh cleaning detergents will strip our skin of its natural oils. The weather can also be a contributing factor. Exposing our skin to the cold, wind or a combination of both will most certainly dry them out!

How to fix it: Always have a moisturizer available and use it after you wash your hands. We love with the Healing Hands moisturizer from Saje and the Ultimate Strength Hand Salve Mini from Khiel’s.

Remember that gloves are your best friends! Always wear gloves to protect your hands from cold dry weather and while using cleaning products around the house. You can also try a DIY overnight hand mask! Pick out one of your favorite body oils, massage it into your skin, and put a pair of cotton gloves on to avoid staining your sheets – et voila, you’ll wake up with perfectly moisturized hands! Who knew it could be this easy?

Pro Tip: For a better overall hydrated skin, increase your daily water intake and invest in a good humidifier. Let it run during the night – this will help keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
